Roskilde Domkirke / Roskilde Cathedral
HISTORY : For over 1000 years a church in some form has stood from whence the modern cathedral ascends. The original wooden structure was built by Harald Bluetooth around 965 A.D. The fired brick additions, brought to Denmark by traveling monks, were completed in the 12th century. The cathedral has been the main burial site for Danish monarchs since the 15th century.
It was placed on the UNSECO World Heritage Site list in 1995.
OUR VISIT : We arrived 30 minutes before closing on a Sunday afternoon. Entry fee for an adult was 60 DK / 9 USD. The cashier was apologetic in that she still had to charge us with only half an hour remaining. Our sole regret was not having enough time, though so late in the day afforded us a less crowded experience.
The lighting in the cathedral is in parts bright, effervescent even purifying whereas in others the darkness assumes a macabre cloak lurking under every lintel. This is especially evident in the lower crypts, Krag's Chapel and Christian IV's Chapel.
